Herbal Treatment For Menopause Relief Found To Be Practically Useless
A fairly recent study has concluded that a well-known herbal treatment for menopause relief called black cohash has been found to be practically useless at relieving hot flashes and night sweats, symptoms commonly associated with menopause.
Historically, Native Americans used black cohosh as a natural treatment for a variety of ailments, including sore throats, kidney problems, depression and gynecological maladies.
More recently, black cohash (a member of the “Buttercup” plant family) has been marketed (as a dietary supplement) to women as one of the strongest combatants against menopause symptoms, specifically hot flashes and night sweats.
The research findings were disappointing news to women seeking safe, holistic alternatives to modern hormone replacement therapy, which has been linked to breast cancer, stroke and heart attack.
The year-long study (with more than 350 women participating) found that black cohash was no more effective as a herbal treatment for menopause relief than those given a placebo.
Funded by the National Institute on Aging, one of the epidemiologists conducting the study noted (regarding the fact that black cohash was found to be an ineffective treatment for hot flashes and night sweats); “It would (have been) nice to offer something safe and effective…it’s disappointing news.”
These findings came about a week after researchers reported a somewhat dramatic decline in the number of breast cancer cases in the US, a drop health professionals attributed (at least partially) to fewer women using hormone therapy as a treatment for menopause symptoms.
This does not imply that all plant-based supplements have the same “black-eye” as black cohash.
Recent studies at the Mayo Clinic have proven that the phytoestogens found in flaxseed another herbal treatment for menopause relief can diminish or totally thwart hot flashes and night sweats.
More recently, a concentrated form of the flaxseed phytoneutrient, called “flax-hull lignans”, have been found to produce 7 to 10 times the menopause symptom stopping power of whole ground flaxseed!
